Exposure to ideas inspires new ways of thinking.

Art encourages students to interpret, reflect and question ideas from different perspectives.

Independent thinking grows when students are exposed to ideas that ask them to look again, think deeply and form their own understanding.

With your support, the Sculpture Walk brings significant artworks into daily school life. These works invite students to engage with ideas visually and emotionally, encouraging reflection, interpretation and open discussion.

The Melbourne Grammar School Sculpture Walk was officially opened in 2016, with the unveiling of the first installation, Cover Up No. 18 by internationally acclaimed artist Professor Callum Morton (OM 1982). The latest installation, Ape Right Hand, created by renowned visual artist Lisa Roet was unveiled in May 2023.

Your support helps ensure students regularly encounter art that challenges their thinking and broadens their perspective, strengthening their ability to form ideas with confidence and clarity.

Measuring moments, shaping perspectives

Measuring moments, shaping perspectives
When students walk past Linear and Circular, the latest addition to Melbourne Grammar School’s living gallery, they’re not just walking by an artwork – they’re stepping into a conversation about time and the way we understand the world around us.

Being surrounded by such high-quality and thoughtfully curated public sculptures shows just how much the School values creativity and artistic expression. Seeing what’s possible at a large scale and in a professional context is truly inspiring.

Cover Up #18 (2016)

The first commission for the Sculpture Walk is Cover Up #18 by Callum Morton, an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist, an alumnus of the School and current Director, Monash Art Projects, at Monash University

Ape Right Hand (2023)

Lisa Roet’s Ape Right Hand continues the artist’s longstanding enquiry into the close relationship between humans and primates. It is informed by her international research and the expertise of zoologists and language specialists.

Linear and Circular (2025)

Created by renowned Melbourne-based artist Benjamin Armstrong, Linear and Circular is a painted steel sculpture installed near the Geoff Handbury Science and Technology Hub. The piece contrasts our linear concept of time, measured and clinical, with circular time – fluid, raw and expansive.
